The TV Role Model

A Site About the Influence of TV Characters on Kids

Home Page

Welcome! Kids do not see the world through the same eyes of experience as do adults. Kids see things more for what they are and have a harder time distinguishing fiction from reality. No wonder fictional (and reality TV) television characters are such a big influence in kids’ lives! Kids imitate their favorite television characters consciously and/or subconsciously, which can have positive affects on kids, but also extremely negative affects. Over three-quarters of the female characters in television comedies are underweight, more often then not, television characters use violence to resolve conflicts, and on television one alcohol drinking scene is shown every twenty two minutes. And the average kid watches three to four hours of television a day! Kids are exposed to these negative fictional (and reality TV) role models much too often, which influences kids to look and act differently, a risk to their physical and mental healths.
